It's true, and just as soon as Mladen can work out why I'm responsible for world hunger, I'll have that as my fault as well. :)

Subject: Re: ORA-03113 end of file on communication channel

Well, as you know, "the end of communication rope" happens when the server process
dies. There should be an accompanying error in the alert.log file. Usually, those
errors are ORA-7445 and ORA-600, which give people much craved opportunity to use
metalink. ORA-7445 means that there was an exception in the server process. The only
case when it can legitimately happen, without laying the blame on Pete Sharman, is
when the address space is not large enough. Typically, OS will let users to have
process sizes of about 2GB, and will terminate anything that exceeds the boundary.
OS parameter for that purpose defines the maximum size of page tables per segment or
per process. You can suspect the VM size if the address at which the problem occurs
is extremely large. If, on the other hand, the address is very small, <= 4k, then
the program tried to access the page 0, which has deliberately been marked "no access",
in order to catch the attempts of dereferencing the NULL pointer. If the address is
close to 0, oracle tried to use NULL pointer, and that is Pete's fault. ORA-600 is
his fault, too.
